error f04 in Hotpoint washing machines

Error F04 on Hotpoint washing machines

What the F04 error usually means on a Hotpoint washing machine

On some Hotpoint models, the F04 error is associated with a problem in the water level system (pressure switch/pressure chamber). In plain terms: the washing machine expects to receive a “correct level” signal, but that signal is not coming through as it should, so it stops for safety.

Depending on how it shows up, you may notice:

  • The washer keeps filling as if it can’t detect the level
  • Some water enters, but the cycle gets stuck and won’t advance
  • Odd stops at the beginning, as if the appliance doesn’t “know” what level it’s at

How to clear F04 and what to check so it doesn’t come back

With F04, the idea is to rule out a one-off state and remove typical causes of level faults (blockages in the pressure/air path). If the error persists, it usually requires technical inspection.

  1. Complete electrical reset
    • Turn the washing machine off
    • Unplug it for at least 2 minutes
    • Plug it back in, wait 30 seconds, and try a program
  2. Check the water inlet and tap (no disassembly)
    • Make sure the tap is open and water pressure is normal
    • If your home has low pressure, wait and test again later
  3. If the machine keeps filling, shut the water off and don’t leave it unattended
    • Don’t leave the washer attempting to fill without supervision
    • If the level rises oddly, stop the program and close the tap
  4. Observe the pattern to guide the diagnosis
    • If the fault is constant from the start, it usually points to level sensing/reading
    • If it appears intermittently, it fits a partial blockage or an irregular contact
  5. When it’s best to call a technician
    • F04 returns after the complete reset
    • The washer keeps filling uncontrollably or always gets stuck at the start
    • There’s no tap/pressure issue and the behavior repeats

In that case, it’s common to check the pressure switch, the pressure circuit (hose/chamber), and connections, because the level control is genuinely failing.

If F04 was a one-off state, it may disappear after a reset. If it repeats or the filling becomes abnormal, the most efficient solution is to have the water level system inspected so the washer can regulate properly again.
